What is a varicose vein?
A varicose vein is an abnormal dilation of a vein caused by insufficiency of the venous system. The venous system is responsible for returning blood from the extremities to the heart. The valves of the veins prevent the blood from flowing back in the opposite direction under the effect of gravity. When the valves of the veins no longer function, as is the case in peripheral venous insufficiency, the blood flows back down to the feet, which can cause small spider veins, varicose veins, swelling and pain in the lower limbs. The most important risk factors for venous insufficiency are heredity, female gender, pregnancy, weight and prolonged standing.
Although the majority of these factors are not modifiable, we can act on certain components to reduce the risk of disease progression.
